This is how the Aster medicity management tackled the situation.
On receiving news of the possibility Idukki dam shutter opening, in mid July 2018, the foresight of the Hospital admin got kindled,they immediately met,
a) Engineering division was asked to observe round the clock, the flow of River Periyar between Cheranalloor and Kothadu
b) They submitted application in writing with many other big Hospitals to accommodate patients on an emergency basis on war footing
c) On the day of the first shutter of Idukki dam being opened, an additional diesel generator and a water pumping motor were procured and installed
d) Drinking water and diesel were stored much more than needed
e) Arrangement was made to observe water level of the River Periyar flowing nearby , every hour
f) On 15th August 2018 morning onward , it was observed that water level is rising with alarming speed
g) Around evening of 15/08/18 , it was confirmed that the other distant Hospitals with whom correspondence was initiated on 01/08/18, that they have enough intensive care units , wards and facilities to accommodate Aster's patients ( 348 persons including 110 ones who were in extremely critical health condition )
h) Ambulance service with ventilator facility was arranged to evacuate the patients , Air ambulance too was arranged
i ) All senior staff and other personnel were instructed to stay at the Hospital on 15th August night and on 16th August
j) The news of opening all shutters at all dams , made observation of water level for every 15 minutes
k) It was arranged to devise graph of water level of the river from midnight of 15/08/18
l) Orange alert was declared at Hospital at 5 AM on 16/08/18
m) It was arranged that within 15 minutes, Intensive Care patients to be evacuated
n) At 7 AM on 16/08/18, entire leadership met for a final round before starting the operation , chaired by the Chief Operative Officer
o) Trial run were done by dummy vehicles to and fro , the distant Hospitals with whom , the temporary evacuee system was arrived at, since 15/08/18 , to check and ascertain the road safety etc
p) Shot cut routes were discovered to reach destination in shorter time
q) The operation started with neo natal I.C.U ones, the new born and their Mothers
r) Patients with ventilator support followed
s) Each convoy had a medical doctor and nurses
t) The ambulance service started at 8.30 AM on 16/08/18, at that time not even a bucket of water of River Periyar was in the premises
u) The last patient shifted safely around 11 PM, 16/08/18, followed by buses full of Hospital staff, nursing orderlies, para medical staff etc , it was around midnight that water entered the underground bunkers, electric controls destroyed and power cut off.
The Entire Hospital was successfully evacuated before the water gushed into the premises and bunkers.
